Apple's iPhone Charger Trade-in Plan

To address safety concerns, Apple will let customers trade third-party chargers for discounted Apple chargers.

Beginning August 16, Apple will let iPhone customers trade in their non-Apple USB charger for one made by Apple. The program is a response to media reports of injuries and at least one death caused by faulty chargers.
The USB Power Adapter Takeback Program is meant to ensure that owners of Apple devices are safe. "Customer safety is a top priority at Apple," the company states. "That's why all of our products -- including USB power adapters for iPhone, iPad, and iPod -- undergo rigorous testing for safety and reliability and are designed to meet government safety standards around the world." Chargers made by companies other than Apple, however, may not meet the same safety standards.
Last month, Ma Ailun, a 23-year-old flight attendant with China Southern Airlines, was electrocuted when she answered a phone call as her iPhone was plugged into the wall and charging. The woman had burn marks on her neck where the cord touched her. Apple promised to investigate the matter, and it turns out she was using a non-Apple charger. Apple hopes its Takeback program will prevent any similar scenarios in the future.
Apple said that most third-party chargers are safe. However, consumers who feel that their charger may not be safe can get Apple's charger by simply bringing the third-party power adapter to their local Apple retail store. Replacements are not free, but consumers who turn in at least one charger will be able to buy an Apple charger at the reduced price of $10 (or the equivalent outside the U.S.) In order to qualify, customers must bring their iPhone to the store so Apple can verify the serial number. Customers are allowed to buy one $10 Apple charger for each of their i-devices, including the iPhone, iPad and iPod.
The USB Power Adapter Takeback Program runs from August 16 to October 18 in the U.S. The program dates outside the U.S. vary by country.
There are too many companies that make iPhone accessories, including chargers, to list here. Much of the wall space at Apple's larger retail locations is dedicated to third-party accessories and companion products. Any product sold at an Apple Store is designed to function properly with Apple's products and should not be a cause for concern. Apple is more worried about off-brand products purchased at local electronics stores, which may not comply with Apple's safety standards.

Redbox Instant comes to Roku

The fledging joint venture from Redbox, the DVD-rental kiosk company, and Verizon adds another device to push its catalog of streaming movies straight to TVs.
Roku is getting one more channel, and Redbox Instant by Verizon is getting access to one more device to watch its streaming video on the television.
Redbox Instant announced Monday that Roku has been added to its list of devices. The joint venture of Verizon and Redbox, the DVD-rental kiosk company known for its big red machines in grocery stores and Wal-Marts, had already said it would be coming to Roku this summer.

As Netflix has left its DVD-rental business unattended while focusing on becoming the leading site for streaming movies and video on the Web, Redbox Instant fills the vacuum for consumers who want both DVD and online options for cheap. It also focuses more on people attracted to new release films than its streaming competitors.
An $8 monthly subscription to the service gives a user unlimited streaming and four DVD credits at Redbox machines.
Owners of the Roku 3, Roku 2, Roku HD and Roku LT player or the Roku Streaming Stick can access the new Redbox Instant channel, and those who aren't monthly subscribers to the service can purchase and rent new releases on demand.
Redbox Instant is already present on Xbox 360, Samsung Smart TVs and Internet Connected Blu-ray devices, LG Smart TV's, and Google TV, as well as on iOS devices and a web-based application.

75% of ATMs in the US Are Still Running Windows XP

Windows XP continues to be the second most popular OS worldwide

If you are a Windows user, you most likely know that Microsoft is planning to discontinue the ancient XP next year, so it should be a priority for everybody to move to a newer OS.

Microsoft is obviously pointing to the security risks caused by an unpatched operating system, but it appears not everyone cares about this.

According to a report by InformationWeek, no less than 75 percent of ATMs in the United States are still running Windows XP, even though the operating system is set to go dark in about 8 months.

While security is clearly a main concern for ATM operators, experts believe that it would be very hard for an attacker to identify the operating system of a cash machine.

“While the sunset of any operating system should cause concern, I am not certain that most crooks will be able to identify the OS of an ATM, thus it is less likely that simply running an ATM with Windows XP represents a bigger threat,” Marc DeCastro, research director at IDC Financial Insights, was quoted as saying.

As far as end users are concerned, Windows XP is still powering about 37 percent of computers worldwide, a market share that makes it the second most popular operating system across the globe.

XKeyscore: NSA Can See Nearly ALL Internet Activity

The Guardian released information on the NSA's XKeyscore Program, which seems to corroborate the most wide-held fears about the government agency. Annie tells you how with this program, NSA analysts have nearly unlimited access to anything that happens online. She also takes a look at the presentation slides, and gives some insight as to how easy it is for the NSA to access this information.

TUTORIAL: (WiFi-)Wardrive With An Android Device

In this tutorial, I am going to show you how to wardrive with an Android device.

If you don't know what wardriving is, it is defined as "the act of searching for Wi-Fi wireless networks, using a GPS-equipped device such as a smartphone or computer.

Basically, we are going to exploit our Android device's Wi-Fi and GPS capability to record the location of wireless networks. Each wireless network's GPS coordinates and information (name, mac address, encryption type, and signal strength) will be stored in a KML file, which will enable us to view our route in Google Earth. The wireless networks will be represented by color-coded dots on the Google Earth map so we can easily distinguish between open and encrypted wireless networks. Theoretically, a hacker could use this method to identify vulnerable networks and then navigate back to those networks. If you are wardriving solely to detect the presence of wireless networks (without malicious intent), wardriving in and of itself is NOT illegal. However, the unsolicited association with a wireless network (open or encrypted) is illegal.

What you need:

1) an Android device (smartphone or tablet)
2) G-MoN (A free application in the Google Play Store)
3) Google Earth
